E-Learning

What Is E-Learning And Why Is It Important?

E-learning is a process people do over the internet. Formerly called "internet based learning" and "web based learning" it is now known in many forms of e-learning. The history of e-learning is short and sweet - it began at the University of Illinois and exploded onto the web.

E-learning is done in virtual classrooms. Virtual classrooms come in a variety of ways, including CD ROMs, lessons sent by internet and digital collaboration. E-learning is a unique way to get an education without leaving the comfort of your own home. This is ideal for people who cannot leave home for medical reasons, are continuing their education while working full time, or are stay at home parents to young children.

E-learning is not just for degrees. Many people use e-learning for casual learning to learn more about other topics that interest them. Some focus on their field of employment to enhance or compliment their current education. Others focus on their hobbies to increase their skills and knowledge of that particular subject. Others still focus on continuing their education while working to support themselves and their families.

E-learning is a great way to learn new things and refresh old educations. However, it is promoting a non-individual education system that does not allow individual assistance as easily as classroom education does. E-learning has all the benefits of classroom learning, but it also has some of the negatives. Individualized attention is necessary to some people to get the full benefit of their education.

E-learning is not for everyone, however it can be a wonderful thing for most people. Learning from a computer screen can be a challenge for people who cannot see very well. This is why some classes offer recorded lessons.

There are many definitions of e-learning. All agree on one thing - that it is an electronically based learning system. Some web based learning systems cost money, others do not. Most universities that offer e-learning do charge fees for the instructor's time.

E-learning can be used on various devices, too. Palm pilots, computers, laptops, and MP3 players are only a few of the options people can use when learning online. This enables people to learn anywhere, any time. Coffee and lunch breaks while at work make great learning times for most people. It can be a relaxing time and this allows people to concentrate on getting their work done before going home. Another great time to learn using these devices is on the commutes to and from work.
