What's Web Content Management And Why's It Important?

A web content management system is a system that allows users to manage the content on their websites using various methods and tools to enhance the website. Web content management includes site management, content creation, access control, workflow, and delivery.

Generally, a web content management system consists of two components: the content delivery application and the content management application. The content delivery application compiles and uses the information from the content management application to update the website. The content management application allows the content author to manage the website without using Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML, or a webmaster to update the website.

Web content management systems vary from site to site, however the generally have web-based publishing, revision control, search, indexing, retrieval, and format management. Web-based publishing allows users to use a template or a series of templates to modify or create web content. A web content management system may also feature a one-to-one marketing tool to allow you to tailor your advertising and content to a user's detailed features provided by the user or gathered from the site. Revision control tracks changes made to any files by the individuals. It also allows changes made to be updated or be returned to a former document.

Before deciding on a web content management system, there are two factors to consider. The geographic dispersion and size of a company must be a consideration, especially if the corporation is spread out over the world. In addition, the diversity of the content must be a factor. If the organization is using multiple forms of content, such as video, audio, pictures, documents and more, it will be more difficult to manage using a web content management system.

Many web content management systems cannot integrate fully with multiple repositories, ensure any legal compliance, or acquire data. This generally is not a problem if a company is starting from scratch.

Managing web content, or the textual, visual, and aural content, is becoming easier as new web content management systems are created. While this is a slow process, many people are finding it easier to use these systems to manage their websites. The easier web content management becomes, the more people who do not know anything about websites and what it takes to maintain them will spring up to create their own. Those that do have the experience managing a website will find it easier to do so as these new web content management systems become available.
